Brigit

This tapestry is woven from cotton and wool on a cotton warp.

The bowl, beads and moon shape on the top right hand corner are felted from local sheep’s wool.

Approximate size:  3ft x 2ft.

In Ireland there was a strong presence of pagan worship to the goddess Brid that left behind many stories, songs and rituals.  The presence of Brid in the Irish psyche amalgamated into present day St. Brigit whose feast day is celebrated on February 1st each year.

This tapestry looks through the offering of the Christian symbol of rosary beads towards the Pre Christian symbol of a sensuous, intuitive Brid who in turn looks towards the moon a symbol connected with feminine wisdom.  The tapestry celebrates past tradition, holding historic effort and presence in moving forward.
